
Photo and video sharing service, Instagram, intends to shut down “Direct” - a standalone application which is used for sending private messages.
It was firstly reported by social media expert Matt Navarra:

“In the coming month, we’ll no longer be supporting the Direct app. Your conversations will automatically move over to Instagram, so you don’t need to do anything,” it is indicated in a notification that pops up in the application.
For the moment the reasons why Instagram closes down the app are unveiled as well as the date of its closure.
At the beginning of this year information appeared that the parent company intends to combine Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook messengers interfaces. And this could be one of the first steps towards such a merger.
